This month sees a fourth contract awarded to Granada for Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL) – one of the largest private investment projects ever undertaken in Scottish infrastructure.
Under this new contract, Granada will ensure that all 84 davit crane units installed on the project are commissioned in accordance with current legislation and with Granada’s original equipment supplier requirements. Each of the Python cranes – a design unique to GMH – has been specifically tailored for the Beatrice project, with one Python crane fitted to each of the wind turbine foundations and two more cranes fitted on the OTM platforms.

The Award will be presented to Granada during a ceremony at Hilton Birmingham Metropole in July. For more information about the RoSPA Awards visit www.rospa.com/awards
Having recently delivered their 1000th wind farm davit crane, Granada Material Handling are employed across multiple foundation yard locations ensuring their range of cranes are commissioned and tested prior to installation offshore.
From Denmark to Dubai, Granada’s trained and certified crane technicians are currently supporting the following wind farms with commissioning works: EA1, Hornsea, Galloper and Beatrice.
Granada Material Handling have delivered their 1,000th windfarm davit crane – as part of their contract for Hornsea Project One
A landmark for GMH, this reflects the company’s reputation across the offshore renewables sector, with GMH cranes already working on or specified for projects including: Nissum Bredning, Denmark; ongoing work with Orsted Energy for the Hornsea project; East Anglia ONE Windfarm for Scottish Power Renewables, as well as contracts with Babcock Intl. for the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm (BOWL) project.
Commenting on this landmark, Mark Sidwell, director of Granada Material Handling Limited, said, “We are extremely pleased to have reached this prestigious milestone in our delivery programme; this is testament to our tried, tested and proven product and to our strong UK supply chain. With the recently announced contract wins for Granada at East Anglia 1 and Hornsea Offshore windfarms we expect a busy year ahead”
Granada are currently working with several windfarm developers on new projects and will announce further projects shortly.
Granada’s expertise in the automotive sector was on show in a recent Channel 4 documentary, ‘Inside Bentley – a Great British Motor Car’, which showed GMH cranes at work, helping to build the new Bentley Bentayga – the most challenging car Bentley have ever made.
The recent installation of an additional two GMH overhead aero engine handlers at one client’s premises continues a successful year in aviation for Granada.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy have awarded a major European offshore contract to Granada for the design, manufacture, delivery and commissioning of four davit crane units for the Nissum Bredning Vind offshore plant, located off the northwest coast of Denmark.
The Nissum Bredning plant is owned by Nissum Bredning Vindmollerlaug and the energy company Jysk Energi, with financial backing from the Danish Ministry of Energy. The plant is testing technology which is expected to show a significant impact on the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCoE), with Granada’s client Siemens delivering four 7MW direct drive wind turbines.
Granada have been contracted by Siemens to provide their Python cranes for this project. Each Granada Python crane unit measures approximately 3m in height, 3m in radius, and weighs 1,500kg. The maximum lifting capacity for each crane, at 1,000kg, is needed to hoist the heavier serviceable components from the supply vessel to the laydown area on the platforms of the transition piece platform. Designed with the operator’s needs and health and safety as critical factors, the Python cranes are a design unique to Granada.
Welcoming this new contract, Mark Sidwell, director of Granada, commented, “This is a valuable contract for Granada. Building on our successes and our reputation in offshore engineering across the UK, we are keen to grow further in the European renewables sector. Projects such as this one for Siemens will benefit not only Granada’s employees but also companies throughout our supply chain. It’s encouraging to see our ambitious plans for this market demonstrating success, rewarding the expertise and commitment of all our staff at Granada.”
With significant contracts achieved over the summer, Granada are looking forward to delivering on major orders across all areas of the business this coming quarter.
Following a further substantial order for a world-leading aircraft manufacturer, Granada continue to grow their aerospace business with contracts on schedule for pre-Christmas installation, as well as delivering significant bespoke crane and handling contracts in the manufacturing sector. Crossing Granada’s diverse product range, the company’s installation team will be busy delivering multiple crane and gantry packages, including a 5te crane, 3 x 10te cranes, and a 35te crane – all with freestanding gantry steelwork.
With three large wind farm contracts in build, the offshore teams are equally busy. Granada have already delivered nearly 60 davits from an order of 175 to the DONG Hornsea project, as well as 70 davits from the 84 ordered for the Beatrice Wind Farm, and delivery of fully hydraulic cranes will commence shortly for the Scottish Power East Anglia 1 Wind Farm.
Looking forward to the next quarter, Mark Sidwell, director at Granada, commented, “We are extremely pleased with the breadth and scope of contracts won and being successfully delivered across all areas of the company. That we have such a range of prestigious clients, with significant orders, is testament to the dedication and the expertise of all our staff – from our Rochdale headquarters to our Broughton base and our engineers on-site at wind farms throughout the UK.”
Granada Material Handling have been awarded a fourth contract for the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm (BOWL) project, this latest one to design, manufacture, deliver and commission two davit crane units for Babcock International Group.
Each of Granada’s Python crane units has been designed specifically for Beatrice, and Granada will fit one crane to each of the two Offshore Transformer Modules (OTMs) being supplied by Babcock.
The Granada Python crane units for this contract each measure approximately 4 metres in height, 4.5 metres in radius, and weigh 2000kgs. Their maximum lifting capacity of 1600kgs is needed to hoist the heavier serviceable components from the supply vessel to the laydown area on the OTM foundation platform. Their design, unique to Granada, emphasises the health and safety requirements and the needs of the operator in a challenging marine environment.
The 84 turbine, £2.6bn BOWL project is being built by owners SSE, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Red Rock Power Ltd, after reaching Financial Close in May last year, and it will be one of the largest private investments ever made in Scottish infrastructure. Commenting on Granada’s fourth contract for Beatrice, Mark Sidwell, director at Granada, said, “As with our previous contract awards for BOWL, this is not only great news for the Renewables team at Granada but also for our UK supply chain. We are already looking to place orders and to sub-contract specialist areas of work to other UK businesses.”
Granada will deliver the crane units over a 6-month period.
